US and South Korea Adopt Nuclear Deterrent Guidelines

(NationRise.com) – US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol authorized some new nuclear deterrent guidelines, claiming that if North Korea executes a nuclear attack, both nations will deliver an “overwhelming” response. Both leaders approved the measure during a meeting at a NATO summit in Washington, DC.

In a joint statement, President Biden and President Yoon said that the governments of South Korea and the United States reaffirmed “their commitments” in the Washington Declaration. They added that the two governments want peace in East Asia and won’t allow the communist regime of tyrant Kim Jong Un to destabilize it. The statement detailed that the Biden administration reiterated that the American commitment to protect South Korea is backed by all types of military capabilities, “including nuclear.”

During a press conference in the White House, Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-Hyo explained that the statement officializes the deployment of American nuclear assets to South Korea. He also told reporters that the statement represented the first time that the two nations had stated in writing that Washington would send nuclear assets to respond to the North Korean regime’s nuclear weapons. Kim added that the alliance was based on the two nation’s “conventional forces” and was upgraded to nuclear-based.

The guidelines approved took place a year after Washington and Seoul created the Nuclear Consultative Group to boost bilateral planning and the two nations’ responses to any aggression from Pyongyang. Many reporters have said on social media that the primary goal of the Biden administration is that South Korea, which is one of the leading US allies in the region, has a nuclear umbrella to protect itself.

The agreement came after mounting concerns over the new diplomatic and military alliance between the dictatorships of North Korea and Russia, which many have said is centered around the shipments of weapons from Pyongyang to Moscow. Geopolitical experts have said that the Kremlin will likely use these weapons in its war in Ukraine.
