Political Betting Markets ID Favorite Potential Harris VP

(NationRise.com) – Now that Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the support of enough Biden delegates to become the presumptive nominee for her party, all eyes are now on who she picks as her own vice presidential candidate. Some tickets are looking more likely than others.

After President Joe Biden announced he would be stepping back from politics and will no longer seek the nomination from his party on Sunday, the betting markets are starting to give us an idea of the kind of candidates Harris (and the Democratic National Committee) is considering. Harris is, of course, the favorite of the bookmakers, given that all the big names in politics have endorsed her and the delegates have lent her their support. Those same bookmakers seem to think that they know who she’ll be running with, too – and it could be Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.

At least, that’s what we can deduce from the numbers. The betting markets are actually still considering whether Harris might not be the candidate, and Shapiro is second to Harris in terms of odds, according to BetOnline.ag. Behind Harris and Shapiro is controversial California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is at 15/1, and then Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, at 16/1. Former First Lady Michelle Obama is even in the running, according to the betting markets, despite stating publicly and consistently that she will not be seeking the highest office in the land.

But while the betting markets still seem to think there is some doubt about Harris, the party doesn’t. Harris will almost certainly be the nominee.

Shapiro remains one of the most likely VP candidates for Harris, according to left-leaning news outlets. CNN has him ranked right at the top, noting that he beat a so-called “far-right” Republican state senator in 2020 when he became the third Jewish governor elected as Pennsylvania governor. It makes sense that she might choose Shapiro, too – Pennsylvania is the kind of crucial swing state that an extreme progressive like Harris would likely have difficulty winning.

Trailing behind Shapiro are North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.
