Deadly Norovirus Outbreak on P&O Cruises’ Arcadia

A severe norovirus outbreak on P&O Cruises’ Arcadia has resulted in the death of 77-year-old British passenger Alan Forster, sparking concerns about cruise ship safety and illness management. The incident, which affected 128 out of 1,959 passengers, has thrust the cruise industry’s health protocols into the spotlight.

Forster fell ill with norovirus symptoms two weeks into a month-long cruise. His condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to his collapse and subsequent hospitalization in St. John’s, Canada. Tragically, he later died from suspected kidney failure. The family’s frustration over delayed medical attention has raised questions about the adequacy of onboard medical care during such outbreaks.

2024: A Record Year for Cruise Ship Illnesses

The incident on the Arcadia is part of a larger trend. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified 2024 as the worst year for stomach illness outbreaks on cruise ships in over a decade. In the past month alone, there were 890 cases of stomach illness across five recorded outbreaks, involving 781 passengers and 109 cruise employees. “Most outbreaks occur when infected people spread the virus to others through direct contact (such as caring for them, sharing food, or eating utensils with them),” the CDC stated.

The Ruby Princess, along with Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam and Rotterdam, were among the ships reporting outbreaks in the past month. An unknown outbreak also began on December 21 aboard Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2, expected to last through January, 2025.

Cruise Line Response and Accountability

P&O Cruises has expressed sympathy and confirmed that an investigation is underway. However, the company’s response has been met with skepticism from Forster’s family and their legal representatives. Jatinder Paul, representing the family, described the situation as “deeply concerning” and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the failings onboard and the delays in providing medical treatment. “Following an outbreak of norovirus it’s vital that investigations are carried out on the failings on board the cruise ship as well as the delays with getting Alan the medical treatment he needed.”

The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program, which inspects cruise ships and scores them out of 100 based on cleanliness and other factors, has become increasingly important in light of these outbreaks. Out of 151 inspections, 23 required a second inspection, with an average score of 95.9. Nine ships scored between 86 and 89, highlighting the ongoing challenges in maintaining proper sanitation standards.

Prevention and Passenger Safety

Experts emphasize that norovirus spreads easily and can survive on surfaces for extended periods. The best prevention method remains thorough handwashing with soap and water. Cruise lines are implementing increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, with some passengers being quarantined during outbreaks.

As the cruise industry grapples with these challenges, passengers are advised to stay informed about ship sanitation scores and outbreak histories. The tragic death of Alan Forster serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of onboard illnesses and the critical importance of swift, effective medical care during outbreaks.
