(NationRise.com) – Ever since Vice President Kamala Harris became the presumptive presidential nominee for the Democratic Party, the polls have shown very different things. Some pollsters have her up, others have her down – but a particularly damning example from YouGov should spark some concern in the Kamala camp.
According to the survey, which was taken on July 21, the day that President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection, only 37% of respondents say that Harris even deserves to be given the party’s nomination.
Pollsters asked Americans who they believe the Democrats should nominate as their new presidential candidate. Barely more than a third said it should be Harris, while a further 35% said it should be “someone else,” and 27% said they were “not sure.” This means that a majority of Americans don’t believe she should be on the ticket and could give hope to independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
If even the Democrats don’t want Harris, then a former Democrat on an independent ticket might just become compelling…
Harris has real trouble with independents, too. Outside of her party, Americans are not fond of the vice president. 36% of independents said that the Democrats should choose “someone else,” which is more than the 30% who said she should be the candidate.
Among Democrats, Harris’ numbers go up—but it’s still not the best indication that the party is united behind her. Some 60% of Democratic respondents said that she should be the nominee, while 21% believed the candidate should be “someone else,” and the rest were not sure.
The survey wasn’t small, either. Some 2,048 U.S. adults were asked their opinions about the vice president, and also if they approve of the president’s decision to step out of the race. A substantial majority of respondents – some 71% – said that they somewhat or strongly approve of the decision. 70% of Democrats also said that they were strongly or somewhat supportive of the move.
Kamala has a steep hill to climb here.
