FDA Issues Highest-Risk Level Recall Warning

(NationRise.com) – The Food and Drug Administration recently issued an advisory to inform customers of a recall due to a potentially dangerous cross-contamination with peanuts. The recall was designated as Grade I, the highest risk level.

The concern is individually wrapped 6 oz Strawberry Pretzel Salad sandwiches from Leona’s Ice Cream. The food was sold to retailers in Pennsylvania.

People with peanut allergies could be in danger. On July 1, 2024, Leona began the voluntary recall process.

One hundred fifty-six sandwiches were affected by the potential cross-contamination and went to 7 stores in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company learned about the tainted ice cream at 6 a.m. on July 1. All impacted goods were removed from shop shelves by 8:30 a.m. Over half of the recalled goods were recovered and disposed of. It just took two hours to implement and finish the total recall.

The Food and Drug Administration’s website explains that recalls are ranked from most dangerous to least dangerous based on the level of risk they pose to consumers’ health.

Class I is the highest level of danger, and it describes a situation in which one can expect that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause severe illness or even death.

Even though food allergies are commonly understood, the term cross-contact is relatively new. There is a clear distinction between cross-contamination and cross-contact. Preventing biological contaminants in food is an integral part of food service worker training. One of the most prevalent causes of food poisoning is cross-contamination. While food is being prepared or stored, it can get contaminated with microorganisms like viruses and bacteria. Most of the time, you may lessen or even remove the risk of food poisoning by preparing the tainted food properly.

The term “cross-contact” is used to describe the unintentional transmission of an allergy from one food item to another. According to FARE’s explanation, cooking does not lessen or eliminate the likelihood that a person with a food allergy may experience an adverse response to the food that is consumed.
