(NationRise.com) – An inside Department of Homeland Security (DHS) memo reveals that border walls are the most effective method for halting illegal immigration across the United States-Mexico border. Obtained by the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) following a public records request, the memo, conducted in June 2017 for then-Acting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Kevin McAleenan, investigated 25 border areas. It concluded that building a border wall in each area was not only the best means of disrupting irregular migration but also the most financially efficient compared to alternatives like electronic sensors.
Contrary to President Joe Biden’s assertion that border walls are a misuse of funds and not a viable policy solution, the memo undermines his stance. Dale Wilcox, IRLI Executive Director, expressed vindication for those advocating for physical barriers, criticizing the Biden administration for disparaging their support.
While Biden halted border wall construction upon taking office in January 2021, plans were devised to erect an additional wall in Starr County, Texas, due to surging illegal immigration there. The cancellation of wall construction by Biden’s administration, Wilcox argues, marks a string of detrimental immigration policy decisions favoring anti-borders activists over the nation’s interests.
During Donald Trump’s presidency, approximately 370 miles of border wall were built, with 80 miles extending where no previous barrier existed and the remaining 290 miles replacing outdated barriers. Despite this, over 60 percent of the southern border, spanning nearly 2,000 miles, lacks any physical barrier dividing the U.S. and Mexico.
Amid record levels of illegal immigration under Biden, public opinion has shifted in favor of a border wall. A Fox News poll in October revealed that four out of seven registered voters support DHS constructing additional barriers.
IRLI’s Director of Investigations, Matt O’Brien, emphasized the practicality and cost-effectiveness of walls in protecting national security and public safety. He highlighted the Biden administration’s inconsistent stance on border walls, contrasting its past criticism with the present situation’s acknowledgment of their effectiveness amidst the ongoing crisis.
