(NationRise.com) – US President Joe Biden announced on July 21 that he officially suspended his re-election campaign and immediately endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic nominee. A couple of minutes after the announcement, Harris confirmed she was willing to be the nominee, explaining that what President Biden did shows he’s a real patriot who puts the United States as the main priority.
The announcement came after numerous Democratic leaders called for President Biden to step aside and let another liberal politician become the nominee following a disastrous televised debate with former President Donald Trump. The latest Democratic leaders to say that President Biden should suspend his presidential campaign were Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
After Harris’ announcement, many prominent Democrats, including governors and lawmakers, backed the vice president in her presidential bid, saying that she was the party’s best option to defeat Trump. Some of these included former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who praised President Biden for his decision and said that Harris could count on their support.
However, some Democratic leaders who didn’t endorse or express their support for Harris’ bid were former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, who are considered two of the most powerful and influential Democrats. While some political reporters said that the vice president may have had to go through an open convention, she managed to secure the support of more than the 1,976 delegates needed to guarantee her nomination.
Political analysts explained that even when such a process would have been chaotic just a couple of months before the election, they believe many Democrats wanted to make it happen as she may not be the strongest political figure to compete against Trump. So far, no Democratic politician has come forward to challenge the vice president and presumptive nominee.
