(NationRise.com) – Former Republican New York Representative Lee Zeldin announced on Monday he is officially endorsing the 2024 presidential campaign of former President Donald Trump. Many believe this is a move that could get Trump closer to winning the GOP primaries election not only because he’s maintaining his popularity but also because Zeldin’s endorsement would boost his chances.
On his Twitter account, Zeldin said that while the Republican Party has many good candidates that could “save our country” from the errors of the Biden administration, the best nominee will be the “45th & 47th POTUS, Donald Trump.” The former New York Representative added that the economy will get stronger and American lives freer if Trump gets back to the White House. He closed his tweet by saying that the former president “has my full support.”
So far, over 50 Congressional Republicans have expressed their support for Trump’s presidential campaign. These include Republican Florida Representatives Vern Buchanan, John Rutherford, Greg Steube, Cory Mills, Byron Donalds, Anna Paulina Luna, and Matt Gaetz.
Many believe the support of these candidates represents a considerable setback for Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is currently Trump’s main contender according to all polls. While he hasn’t announced a presidential run, numerous media outlets point out he could be able to take this step anytime soon.
According to different reports, Zeldin is currently considering challenging Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel, after the GOP delivered a poor performance in last year’s election cycle. Many blamed Trump for how the party performed below expectations considering that most of the worst defeats came from Trump-endorsed candidates.
Political analysts concluded that this reality only shows that while Trump’s popularity in the Republican Party remains strong, he remains widely repudiated nationwide. In fact, some experts have said that the best-case scenario for the GOP is that Trump loses the primaries since he would be the weakest candidate for a presidential election against President Joe Biden.
