US Secret Service Opens Up About Threats to RNC, DNC

(NationRise.com) – US Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle recently revealed that there’s “nothing credible” to indicate that the Democratic or Republican national conventions could be facing a direct threat over the next few weeks. During an interview with ABC News, Cheatle explained there was “nothing specific” to believe that both parties’ conventions could be in danger.

The Democratic National Convention will start in Chicago on August 19, while the Republican National Convention will take place in Milwaukee on July 15. Cheatle told the network that the Secret Service is currently monitoring any type of threat from foreign or domestic terrorist groups.

The director detailed that the agency needs to “make sure” that they are assessing the risks not only for the two parties’ conventions but also for any threat that the country could suffer during the events. When asked which types of threats these could be, Cheatle said it could be an attack from an organized group or even a “lone gunman.”

Addressing the chance of protests, Cheatle said that the Secret Service and every police department would respect people’s First Amendment rights. However, she explained that what bothers her is the chance that the protests turn violent. When asked what her agency would do in that scenario, Cheatle told ABC that it would take “appropriate action.”

Over the last few weeks, some pro-Palestine organizations in the country said they would hold a demonstration at the Democratic convention to express their disagreement with President Joe Biden’s support for Israel. Some of these organizations have claimed that they would protest even if they don’t receive a city-issued permit.

In a statement, American Muslims for Palestine Director Tarek Khalil said that a coalition of pro-Palestine groups will mobilize thousands of people from all across the nation to demand the end of the US funding for the Israeli government. He also claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was committing genocide against innocent Palestinians in Gaza.
