FDA Issues Class II Warning Over Chocolate Recall

(NationRise.com) – The US Food and Drug Administration recently ordered the recall of eight chocolate products from Wisconsin-based Clasen Quality Chocolate, as the agency fears they could be contaminated with salmonella. On its website, the agency explained that it classified each of the chocolate products at Class II risk, which is usually issued every time a customer suffers temporary adverse health consequences when consuming affected products. The products recalled were:

Caramel Confectionery Drop
Two types of Milk Chocolate Confectionery Coating
Milk Chocolate Crunch
Milk Chocolate Wafer
White Confectionery Wafer
White Chocolate Wafer
Snow-White Chocolate

Salmonella is a common disease in the United States, with over one million people contracting it every year. While most of these infections can be quite uncomfortable, they usually include numerous symptoms such as fever, headache, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramping.

One of the disease’s dangerous aspects is when diarrhea becomes severe, as it can cause dehydration, which can be fatal if not treated properly. In rare and extreme cases, salmonella can lead to life-threatening complications if it enters the bloodstream, including arthritis, endocarditis, and some arterial infections. Health experts have said that symptoms typically appear between six hours and six days after exposure.

While each of the items was recalled because of the potential salmonella contamination on May 3, the FDA eventually published an update in the states of Washington, Utah, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Georgia, and California. On social media, journalists said it remained unclear whether the chocolate products of Clasen Quality Chocolate became contaminated with salmonella or whether any client had fallen ill after consuming any of the eight products recalled.

The FDA explained that consuming a product that has been contaminated with the disease can be seriously dangerous for vulnerable patients, which include those under 12 months old, those with a weak immune system, or those over 65 years old.
