(NationRise.com) – Republican Tennessee Representative Mark Green officially announced his retirement on February 14, saying he won’t run for re-election. The announcement came less than 24 hours after Congress impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a statement, the conservative leader explained that, with the House of Representatives impeaching Mayorkas and passing HR 2, he knew it was time for him to “return home.”
Over the last few months, Green has been overseeing the probe into the Homeland Security secretary and his policies. Many have said these have allowed more than 6 million illegal border crossings since President Joe Biden took office back in 2021. Some Republican leaders have claimed that while the Biden administration is to blame for the current crisis at the southern border, Mayorkas is the man responsible for the number of illegal migrants that have entered the country.
According to a Homeland Security statement, Green and his panel determined that the secretary committed “high crimes and misdemeanors” because of his “systemic refusal” to comply with the US laws and for how he breached public trust.
In his statement, the congressman stated that the Congress and the United States were broken, and said their current state is difficult to “repair.” Green added that his fight is “with Washington,” and promised to keep serving his country as he has done during his “entire life.” However, he explained he would do this in a “new capacity.”
During an interview with Newsmax’s Rob Schmitt Tonight back in January, the Republican leader said that the Senate bill provision to allow 5,000 entries from illegal immigrants into the United States every day was “absurd.” Green also told the host that the legislation was “dead on arrival,” citing his influence as the chair of Homeland Security in Congress.
The Tennessee conservative entered the House back in 2018 from the 7th Congressional District of the so-called Volunteer State, representing a large part of Nashville.
