White House To Appeal Federal Ruling On Big Tech Involvement

(NationRise.com) – According to a recent Bloomberg report, the White House is preparing to appeal a July 4 federal court ruling that found it violated the US First Amendment. The ruling detailed the Biden administration allegedly committed this act after meeting with different tech giants about censoring content on social media platforms.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) said in a statement it would appeal the federal court ruling. This one bans some federal agencies and officials from contacting any social media company in the country to suppress freedom of speech.

Bloomberg also pointed out that the DOJ filed another notice of appeal with the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. Louisiana Judge Terry Doughty made the injunction in response to numerous lawsuits from Missouri and Louisiana attorneys. These lawsuits allege that the Biden administration “encouraged” or coerced some tech companies to suppress free speech during the pandemic.

The federal agencies and officials that the ruling prohibits from meeting with any social media company to suppress free speech include some members of the White House. These are Secretary of Human Services and Health Xavier Becerra, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, and White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

According to Fox News, companies like Twitter and Facebook were specifically named in the lawsuits. The network said it obtained the injunction, which stated that the Biden administration’s actions “likely” violated the Free Speech Clause. It also pointed out that the court isn’t “persuaded by Defendants’ arguments.” Finally, it claimed that the censorship alleged in this case only targeted “conservative speech.”

Reacting to the ruling during a press conference, Jean-Pierre told reporters that the Biden administration disagrees with it. While she said President Joe Biden supports freedom of speech, the Press Secretary didn’t respond to any question about the White House’s alleged attempt to censor conservative voices.
