Trump Pleads Not Guilty to Jan. 6 Charges, Demands Recusal of Judge

( – Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty in federal court on August 1 to all federal charges arising from Special Counsel Jack Smith’s probe into the 2021 Capitol riots and the 2020 election interference. Trump is charged with conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, conspiracy against rights, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy to defraud the country.

US magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhaya presided over the proceedings, and Judge Tanya Chutkan will preside over the trial. Upadhaya said that Judge Chutkan wants to set a date for the trial on August 28 during a hearing. Meanwhile, Trump’s attorney John Laura expressed his opposition when the prosecutor called for a fast trial.

The judge advised the GOP presidential candidate of the indictment counts he was facing and the possible penalties associated with being convicted on them. After reading Trump his rights, the former commander-in-chief was asked how he would plead to the four different counts against him. He responded, “Not guilty.”

After that, Trump was advised on his release conditions. The judge said he must not violate local, state, or federal law. She also said he must serve the sentence the court imposes, as well as appear in court and avoid communication about the case facts with a witness.

Following his plea, Trump told reporters at Reagan National Airport that the indictment represented the politicization of the justice system. He said this was a “sad day” for the United States, as this was a “persecution” of a political figure and an opposition leader. The former president said America should have never experienced this episode and claimed that the Biden administration is persecuting politicians they “can’t beat.”

Speaking to reporters outside of the courthouse in Washington, DC, Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba said that the timing of these indictments wasn’t “a coincidence.” She claims this was chosen to distract Americans from the scandals surrounding the Biden family.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claims his legal team will demand the recusal of D.C. District Judge Tanya Chutkan as there is “NO WAY” he will receive a fair trial with her.
