Suspects Charged in Death of 1-Year-Old

( – The New York Police Department recently announced that a woman and a man were arrested on murder charges following the death of a 1-year-old child. The fatality came after suspected exposure to fentanyl or similar opioids. Police added this situation took place at a daycare center in the Bronx and noted that three other children had to be hospitalized.

In addition to these charges, 36-year-old Grei Mendez and 41-year-old Carlisto Brito were arrested on numerous counts of assault, manslaughter, endangering a child’s welfare, and criminal possession of narcotic drugs and controlled substances. The police said that the victim’s name was Nicholas Dominici.

Different reports pointed out that Mendez and Brito’s relationship with the Bronx’s daycare center wasn’t apparent, noting that the NYPS didn’t comment on this detail.

A spokesperson for NYC’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner stated that the 1-year-old child’s manner and cause of death were currently under investigation. The NYPD explained that the 911 call came in shortly before 3 p.m. and that police officers found Dominici unresponsive and unconscious. While he was immediately taken to a local medical center, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

In a statement, the NYPD noted that police officers also found an unconscious and unresponsive 8-month-old girl and two 2-year-old boys. The girl and one of the boys were also transported to the medical center. While the girl is stable, the boy remains in critical condition as of this writing. The other 2-year-old child was translated to the BronxCare Health System and is also stable.

During a press conference, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said police officials discovered a “kilo press” at the daycare while executing a search warrant. He added that the New York state properly licensed this daycare center, and it was last inspected on September 9 by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. He closed the press conference by saying the investigation was still ongoing.
