Russia Allegedly Suffers Massive Losses in 24 Hour Span

( – The Ukrainian military said on August 21 that Russian forces had lost 19 artillery systems, along with 14 armored vehicles and 12 tanks in Ukraine in the span of 24 hours. This development comes as Kyiv’s counteroffensive nears its third month in the eastern and southern regions of the country.

In an update, the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff said that Russia has so far lost 8,449 armored vehicles and 4,358 tanks since the Kremlin decided to invade Ukraine in February 2022. While Western military experts have said that Ukraine’s tally of damaged and destroyed Russian armored vehicles and tanks is accurate, different reports said it’s challenging to get a precise picture of Kyiv and Moscow’s military losses.

Estimates from Dutch open-source intelligence media outlet Oryx revealed that Moscow has lost 2,253 of its main battle tanks over the last 18 months. However, the media outlet pointed out that number only includes visually verified losses, meaning that the real number could be considerably higher.

On August 20, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that Ukraine’s Armed Forces had lost 11,408 armored personnel vehicles and tanks over the last 18 months. The Kremlin added that the Ukrainian military has also lost nearly 6,000 mortars and field artillery pieces.

According to the American think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the Ukrainian military conducted counteroffensive operations on two frontline sectors on August 20. In its update, the ISW added that the Ukrainian military managed to advance near the Robotyne village, which is controlled by Russian forces and is located south of Zaporizhzhia’s Orikhiv.

In an August 21 Telegram post, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister Hanna Maliar said that Ukrainian forces were “in the direction” of Southern Mala Tokmachka village and south-eastern Robotyne. She added that Russian troops tried to recover some of the lost positions in eastern Robotyne but failed in their efforts.
