Bernie Sanders Targets Amazon Over Worker Conditions

( – In a June 20 letter sent to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders said he’s launching an investigation into the “illegal conditions” at the company’s facilities. The chairman of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) claimed that the company decided to deliberately “harm workers.” He added that Amazon would have to stop violating workplace “safety laws” and change its operations to protect each of its employees.

The probe against this company highlights the efforts by the Biden administration and its allies to ensure Amazon’s responsibility for its employment policies. Different reports have shown 30 hazard alerts and 50 citations issued to the company by US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) since 2015.

In his letter, Sanders claimed that Amazon is a dangerous place for US workers and accused the company of pressuring and intimidating workers. Sanders said that the company executes these practices to make them work harder and faster, which has led many workers to reach a “breaking point.”

According to an OSHA investigation, there were almost 40,000 injuries at warehouses in 2022. The agency also determined that some Amazon warehouses in Colorado, New York, and Idaho had unsafe working conditions. About this situation, Assistant Secretary for Occupational Safety and Health Doug Parker said the company’s “operating methods” are a risk for employees.

While Amazon’s massive profits skyrocketed during the pandemic, the company has suffered massive lay-offs, letting go of nearly 16,000 workers this year. During that time, Sanders said that Amazon showed it could decrease workers’ injuries while the pace of work intensified after lifting pandemic precautions. However, he claimed there were many cases where the injury rates increased, and Amazon did nothing to solve it.

According to the Washington Post, Amazon spokesperson Steve Kelly told the liberal newspaper that the company received the letter from “Chairman Sanders.” He also told the Post that the company is currently in the “early stages” of thoroughly reviewing it.
